Founded in Japan in 2013, Kaval still manufactures by hand in a small factory in the traditionally significant and breathtakingly beautiful landscape of Tochigi, north of Tokyo.
Here, artisans weave and dye their own fabric, honouring the textile traditions of generations past, and finish off the cloth on antique sewing machines. Even the Mashiko ceramic buttons on many of the garments are made using ancient techniques harking back to a craft that the Tochigi region is renowned for. Mashiko’s distinctive local red-brown clay has been used to make everyday objects like water jugs since the 1850s.
Inspired by folk art, craft, history, everyday life, nature and above all people - Every Kaval item is a one of a kind and therefore rare and truly special.
