NOX, a property nestled in the heart of the Byron hinterland, was inspired by the black gabled homes found in many parts of rural New Zealand. The gabled architecture evokes a farmhouse feel, giving a sense of place in this serene hinterland, while the darker textural finishes provide a sense of calm and retreat from the bustling beaches of Byron nearby.
The open plan living spaces occupy the centre of the home, with a north-south orientation. The living and dining rooms feature double height windows looking out to Belongil Beach to the north, separated by a double-sided woodburning fireplace from the kitchen and alfresco spaces facing the rolling hills of the Byron hinterland to the south.
The guest suites and master wing run along the east-west oriented gable at either end of the living zones, allowing separation and privacy.

NOX is a decidedly grown-up house. The design philosophy was organic minimalism in a dark and moody contemporary setting. The moodboard became one of 70% moody, 20% wabi-sabi and 10% luxe. The dark tones provide a distinctly masculine vibe, softened with layers of luxurious textures and natural light.

Materials were chosen for their natural textural elements and dark and moody tones: distressed limestone floors, recycled rough sawn timber walls stained black, forged steel windows, bluestone wall tiles, black stone benchtops in a leathered finish, aged iron tapware, and graphite marble bathware.
